In order to determine aggregate spending, the Departament d'Estadística (Statistics Department) annually conducts an ongoing survey of households in Andorra. These households are randomly selected and their identities are kept anonymous. The information obtained is then used to define the “market basket”, as well as socioeconomic information necessary to determine the country’s household characteristics.
The market basket, representative of a typical Andorran family’s purchases, groups the expenses by spending sector (food, housing, leisure, etc.) The importance of each group in the total expenditure is what determines its weight for the RPI.
Socioeconomic information refers to demographic figures, the types of households as well as the living conditions in our country.
Thus, for example, the economic scales used by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare to grant housing aid stem from the thresholds established using the information collected through the HBS.
